Immunotherapy is a proven allergy treatment that can help eliminate allergies altogether! From the build-up phase to the maintenance, these allergy shots can help you live an allergy-free life. Discover the answers to several frequently asked questions about immunotherapy.
How does immunotherapy work?
Allergy shots work by teaching your immune system to accept the allergen as a harmless particle instead of a harmful threat. Once your immune system has learned this “lesson,” it will stop producing frustrating symptoms such as watery eyes, congestion, sneezing, and more. Why are there two phases of the treatment plan?
The two phases – build-up and maintenance – play different roles in the treatment plan. The build-up phase lasts between four and six months. During this phase, Dr. Brauer will gradually increase the dosage in the shot until immunity is met.
The maintenance phase lasts between three to five years. This phase is used to maintain the lesson that was learned during the build-up phase.
Is immunotherapy effective?
Yes! Immunotherapy is effective due to the length and gradual increase in allergen dosage. You can contribute to its effectiveness by being consistent. When you start immunotherapy, be dedicated to the treatment plan in both the build-up and maintenance phases.
Can my child receive allergy shots?
Dr. Brauer will diagnose your child through an allergy test. From there, she will discuss what treatment option is best for your child – medication or immunotherapy. If all parties agree that allergy shots are the best option for your child, we can proceed with that treatment route.
